Are Media a Mode of Existence? : An Interview with Bruno Latour

Someone asked:

Well, not sure...

But as written in our FAQ:

The number of modes is quite contingent and provisional. [...] There is no overarching principle that decides how many there should be. One must simply bear in mind that the addition of a mode by a contributor means a lot of work (one has to be able to cross it with all the others!) that it must justify itself by its importance as a stakeholder (does it allow us to see more clearly the essential vital questions for the understanding of the Moderns?) and finally, can it allow us to establish another basis of understanding with the other collectives?

Yves Citton is one of the few people to have proposed the existence of a 16th mode, called here [MED] for Media (Mediatique), as he refers to it in this article, “Are Media a Mode of Existence?: An Interview with Bruno Latour” (in French) offered in INA Global #2 (June 2014) and which brings together two comversations he introduces in his first note on the bottom of the page:

“The first interview was conducted by Michal Cuntz and Lorenz Engel at the Internationale Kolleg für Kulturtechnikforschung und Medienphilosophie (IKKM) in Weimar, the 13-14 June 2013, in the context of an AIME workshop dedicated to the beings of fiction, with the participation of Antoine Hennon. It has been published in German under the title, “Den Kühen ihre Farbe zurückgeben. Von der ANT und der Soziologie der Übersetzung zum Projekt der Existenzweisen” (“Giving the Cows their Colors Back: From ANT and the Sociology of Translation to a Project of Modes of Existence.”) in the Zeitschrift für Medien und Kulturforschung (ZMK), Jg. 4 Heft 2 (2013), p. 83-100. The original interview, published in full in German, was considerably more long; only around half has been retained. Our thanks to Professors Cuntz and Engell, as well as the ZMK Review, for their kind permission to reproduce a part of it here. The second interview was conducted on March 31, 2014 in Paris by Yves Citton, who has also made an edited selection of the whole interview, as well as composing some explanatory glossary notes.”
